NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark fell to William Paterson, 9-3, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

Connor Medler (6-1) battled into the sixth inning, scattering eight hits while striking out four and walking four before departing just ahead of William Paterson junior first baseman Adam Derner's three-run homer.
Derner drove in four runs while coming up a triple short of the cycle and junior lefty Bryce Warden subdued Rutgers-Newark for eight innings.
Derner stroked a roundtripper down the leftfield line in the sixth to stake the Pioneers (18-14, NJAC 6-7) to a 7-2 lead. He also doubled and scored to start a three-run third inning as WPU handed Rutgers-Newark (19-14, NJAC 9-6) its fourth straight conference loss. Derner capped his day with an RBI single in the eighth.
Cassese tripled to start the third inning and scored on a single through the left side by Reitemeyer to get the Raiders on the board.
Cassese singled to open the fifth, moved to third on Reitemeyer's double down the leftfield line and scored on a grounder to the second baseman by senior centerfielder
Michael DiCenso to make it 4-2.
Connors opened the eighth with a triple into the rightfielder corner and came home on a ground ball to the left side by junior first baseman
Chris Ballester.
Warden (5-1) scattered eight hits while striking out four and walking two to leave with an 8-3 lead. Junior closer Steve Coral came on with one out in the ninth to get the final two outs and escape a bases-loaded jam without surrendering a run.
WPU senior center Mike Moran went four for five with a two run double in the third inning for the Pioneers while freshman second baseman Scott Ptaszynski went three for five in the WPU's 14-hit assault.
Rutgers-Newark visits William Paterson at 3:30 p.m. on Friday to complete the NJAC home-and-home regular-season series.
