NJIT Stops Scarlet Raiders In Invitational, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark senior right side Austin Pappas hammered down a match-high 20 kills, but NJIT hit .354 with a balanced attack to take a 3-0 win in the final match of The Golden Dome Invitational.  NYU stopped Hunter, 3-1, in the day's opening match.

Freshman outside hitter TJ Jurko paced the Highlanders (2-3) with 13.0 points on nine kills, three aces and a pair of assisted blocks while freshman setter Zak Robben fueled the attack with 27 assists.  Set scores were 25-19, 25-17, 25-16.

Junior right side Doug Battersby and junior outside hitter combined for 13 kills with no errors on 19 attacks to spike NJIT's torrid hitting.  Battersby had seven kills and got in on four blocks while Van Oss chipped in six kills and an ace while getting involved in three Highlander blocks.  Junior libero Brady Smith came up with a match-high 12 digs.

Senior outside hitter Marcin Midura notched nine kills for the Raiders while freshman setter Manuel Felipez had 31 assists and three assisted blocks.  Senior libero Zack Chambers chalked up nine digs.

The Raiders hit just .141 (38 kills, 24 errors, 99 attacks) while failing to deliver a service ace.  R-N had three more kills than the Highlanders (38-35), but an 8-0 deficit in aces coupled with only seven attack errors by NJIT spelled defeat.

In the opener, NYU (1-1) road 21 kills by senior outside hitter Pat Dodd to a 22-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-15 win over Hunter (0-3).  Dodd finished with 24.5 points by adding two aces, a solo block and an assisted block while also coming up with eight digs.

Sophomore middle blocker Nick  Capriccio added 13 kills and an ace while getting in on five blocks.  Senior opposite Luke Hamlet posted 10 kills while sophomore setter Connor Mortland piled up 52 assists while helping NYI hit a crisp .328 (61-17-134).  Sophomore outside hitter Matthew Coghlan came up with 21 of the Violets' 56 digs.

Senior outside hitter Christopher Newcomb paced the Hawks with 14 kills, an ace, a solo block, two assisted blocks and 10 digs.  Junior middle blocker John Gemegah posted 10 kills while sophomore setter Stanley Martinez notched 35 assists.  Senior middle blocker Eric Barty hammered down eight kills, delivered an ace and got in on three blocks for Hunter while sophomore outside hitter Jerin Kallickal contributed 14 digs, five kills and an ace.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Kean University in The Golden Dome at 7 p.m. on Friday.
