NEWARK, NJ – A day after holding Montclair State to a single run, Rutgers-Newark could not find a way to stop the Red Hawks in a 14-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference loss at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The Scarlet Raiders (14-12, NJAC 4-4) suffered their third shutout loss of the season while the Red Hawks (16-10, NJAC 6-2) tied their high for run production behind a 22-hit assault.

Senior righthander Jack McDonough (3-0) handcuffed the Raiders for eight innings, scattering five hits while striking out six against one walk. Sophomore lefty Pat Golden put Rutgers-Newark down in order in the ninth.
Senior designated hitter Kevin Bond hammered a line drive home run to left in the third inning to start a 2-run rally which staked the Red Hawks to a 3-0 lead before Montclair State exploded in the fourth inning. Bond went four for four with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
A 3-run home run to left by junior third baseman Stephen Nappe highlighted the 5-run fourth for the Red Hawks and chased Raider junior right-hander
Kyle Van Vliet (6-2). Van Vliet was tagged for seven runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out one in 3-1/3 innings. Nappe drove in five runs by adding an RBI single in the fifth and a sacrifice fly in the 4-run sixth.
Montclair State used 20 position players while Rutgers-Newark used 18 in the runaway.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC doubleheader in the stadium at noon on Saturday before hosting Johns Hopkins at 1 o'clock on Sunday.
