IN THE OPENER, Merlino's shot over the left field wall stunned the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark junior right-hander Michael Garcia took a no hitter into the sixth as he allowed two runs on just two hits and four walks while striking out five in eight full innings of work.  Senior closer Nick Evans (0-1) got the loss, allowing only Merlino's home run.

The Scarlet Raiders (14-13, NJAC 4-5) lost despite allowing just three hits as the Scarlet Raptors (12-17, NJAC 3-7) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to get the victory.  A fielder's choice ground ball off the bat of junior leftfielder Albert Rivera plated the tying run in the seventh.

Sophomore first baseman Vin Troisi had an RBI single to right in the third inning and sophomore shortstop Kevin Olah plated a run with a single to center in the fourth, but Raptor starter Andrew Hoffman struck out six while yielding five hits and six walks in nine innings.  Sophomore closer Dan Synder got his fourth save of the season, stranding two runners.

IN THE SECOND GAME, the Raptors jumped on Raider junior starter Matt Larangera (4-4) for six runs in the first inning and two in the second as Rutgers-Newark never seemed to recover from Merlino's home run.

Raider senior centerfielder Chris Ballester, who went two for four with a double in the third inning, led off the R-N first inning with a single and scored on a 2-out single to center by freshman designated hitter Nick Gencarelli.

Freshman shortstop Matt Goldberg, who went two for three, got the only other extra-base hit for the Raiders with a double in the second inning as Rutgers-Camden sophomore Tommy Potts (3-2) scattered seven hits while striking out nine to the distance.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Johns Hopkins at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the Stadium.
