NEWARK, NJ – It was a long day in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium for Rutgers-Newark as Keystone College piled up 15 hits against seven Scarlet Raider pitchers in an 18-4 decision.
BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY
Junior first baseman
Vin Troisi and sophomore designated hitter
Owen Harshaney had two hits apiece to pace the Raiders' 9-hit attack, but a season-high seven Rutgers-Newark errors and nine walks helped fuel the highest run total by an opponent this season.
Harshaney doubled twice while Troisi capped a 3-run outburst by Rutgers-Newark in the fourth inning with a 2-run single. Harshaney's second double started the spree with sophomore left fielder
Jason McCluskey driving him in with a 2-out double to right centerfield to begin the scoring.
Raider junior starter
Matt Larangera (3-3) got the loss after giving up four runs on five hits while striking out one and walking two in the opening two innings. Sophomore
Michael Garcia came on to strike out four while yielding two unearned runs on three hits during the third and fourth innings.
But the Giants (13-4), who were already ahead 6-1 before the fourth, piled on four more runs in the top of the fifth to break open the game.
Sophomore rightfielder
Jimmy Napolitano got Rutgers-Newark on the board in the first with a 2-out RBI double off the leftfield wall which plated Troisi, who was aboard after a single, from first base.
The game was called because of darkness after the eighth inning after Keystone posted seven runs in the top half of the frame.
Keystone used 16 position players in the contest while Raider head coach
Mark Rizzi employed 13 in the 3-hour, 10-minute marathon.
Rutgers-Newark (11-8) takes on DeSales in the stadium at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
