RUTGERS-NEWARK BASEBALL

Anthony Palladino
NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark stranded 13 runners while falling to Richard Stockton, 5-2, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

Senior catcher Anthony Palladino went three for four with an RBI single in the sixth inning to pace the Scarlet Raiders' 10-hit attack against the Ospreys (14-8, NJAC 2-1).  Senior third baseman Tim Miller, sophomore leftfielder Owen Harshaney and senior centerfielder Chris Ballester notched two hits apiece for the Raiders (12-9, NJAC 2-1).  Miller scored both of the Rutgers-Newark runs while Harshaney doubled for the fourth time in as many games.

After giving up two runs on two hits and a walk in the top of the first, Raider sophomore starter Michael Garcia (0-2) settled into a pitching duel against Osprey senior lefty Bryan Frank (3-2) until the sixth.

Back-to-back doubles by designated hitter Marc Asta and shortstop Shawn Kessler pushed the Stockton lead to 4-1 in the sixth.  Garcia finished the inning before departing with nine hits and two walks allowed against two strikeouts.

Kessler went two for four with a pair of RBIs while Asta and rightfielder Dan McGuckin had two hits apiece to lead the 11-hit Stockton offense.

Frank, who gave up a sacrifice fly to sophomore shortstop Kevin Olah in the second, gave up an RBI single to Palladino in the sixth before being pulled in the top of the seventh after Ballester led off with a hard single through the right side.  He scattered six hits and walked four while striking out three before sophomore righty Brandon Trainor earned his second save of the season by shutting out Rutgers-Newark over the final three frames.  Trainor allowed four singles while striking out three and walking one.

Junior Kyle Van Vliet came out of the bullpen to blank the Ospreys in the seventh before junior Matt Larangera gave up a run on two singles in the eighth.  Closer Nick Evans stranded a runner on third in the ninth but allowed no runs.

In a frustrating day, the Raiders got only two of nine runners home from second base while Stockton plated five of 11 runners in scoring position.  All but one of the Osprey runs were scored with two outs.

Rutgers-Newark travels to Galloway on Friday to complete the home-and-home regular-season series before visiting The College of New Jersey for an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
