REDLANDS, CA – A six-run third inning carried the University of Redlands to an 8-3 win over Rutgers-Newark at The Yard as the Scarlet Raiders managed just five singles.

First baseman Vin Troisi, rightfielder Jimmy Napolitano, designated hitter Graham Commesso, leftfielder Matt Larangera and catcher Steve Tamayo notched the Scarlet Raider hits as the Bulldogs used six pitchers to thwart the Rutgers-Newark attack.

Four of the first five Bulldog batters singled in the third inning against junior right-hander Jonathan Dominguez (0-3) as Redlands used three Raider errors to push across two unearned runs to cap the spree and take a commanding 7-0 lead.  Junior Tyler Kwiatek replaced Dominguez with one away in the third and gave up two runs on a walk, a passed ball and an error before settling in.

Kwiatek, Brian Kokos and Billy Taylor allowed just one earned run on six hits while striking out five over the final 5-2/3 innings to keep the Raiders in the fray.

In the fourth inning, Napolitano was hit by a pitch and Commesso drew a walk to set up a one-out RBI single to center field by Larangera.  Tamayo singled to right field to make it 7-2, but the next batter grounded into a double play to kill the rally.

Troisi led off the seventh with a single and moved to third on a base hit by Napolitano before scoring on a ground ball to second base by Commesso.

The Raiders (2-9) fell for the seventh straight time while the Bulldogs (12-10) won for the fifth time in their last six outings.

Rutgers-Newark plays at Whittier College on Wednesday at 3 p.m. (PDT).
