WHITTIER, CA – Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 3-0 lead but Whittier College rallied for a 5-3 win in Memorial Park.

Junior shortstop Kevin Olah went three for four to pace the Scarlet Raiders' nine-hit attack, but the Poets (10-12) got timely hitting to hand Rutgers-Newark (2-10) its eighth straight loss.

The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the third when freshman centerfielder Ryan Macfarlane walked with two outs, stole second base and came home on a single to right field by freshman second baseman Gerry Patrizio.

In the top of the fourth, Jimmy Napolitano doubled and scored on a single to left by Olah before an infield error and a single by freshman third baseman Brian Kokos plated the Raiders' third run. But that was the final score for Rutgers-Newark.

Sophomore designated hitter Cody Martinez hammered a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth and a two-out, two-run pinch hit single to center field by junior Willie Renard gave Whittier the lead for good in the sixth.

A two-out RBI double by freshman leftfielder Jonathan Whipple in seventh gave the Poets an insurance run.

Senior starter Michael Schneider (0-2) went 5-2/3 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out one and walking three.  Senior Anthony Caravano, who was greeted to the mound with Renard's game-winning hit, gave up one run on two hits in an inning of work before freshman Chris Nichols closed out the game with an inning and a third of no-hit, no-run relief.

Rutgers-Newark is at Chapman (11-11) for a 7 p.m. (PDT) contest on Thursday.
