Nasti Dominates Redlands In 7-1 Raider Win

Box Score REDLANDS, CA – Rutgers University-Newark junior righthander Andrew Nasti handcuffed the University of Redlands on three hits over the first eight innings in a 7-1 win at The Yard.

Nasti struck out six and walked three in a dominant performance while 10 Bulldog pitchers walked a total of a dozen Scarlet Raiders.  Senior lefthander Ryan Staub closed out the game, allowing only a 2-out double.

The Scarlet Raiders jumped on the Bulldogs for five runs in the second and third innings and rode Nasti's arm into the fifth inning before giving up a run.

Sophomore leftfielder Cameron Dias roped an RBI double to left field and sophomore centerfielder Ryan MacFarlane delivered a 2-out single to center as Rutgers-Newark notched the first two runs in the second inning.

In the third, senior shortstop Kevin Olah walked and stole second ahead of an RBI double to left by senior rightfielder Jimmy Napolitano.  Back-to-back walks loaded the bases and led to the departure of sophomore reliever Jake Hirshman who did not record and out.  Junior third baseman Nick Gencarelli greeted freshman lefthander Nate Richards with a 2-run single to left field to push the Rutgers-Newark advantage to 5-0.

Nasti cruised into the fifth having allowed just one hit, but a lead-off double to junior third baseman Christian Gurrola and a single to senior designated hitter Max Hardman put runners on the corners with no one out.  The Bulldogs scored on a double-play grounder to second.

A 1-out walk to sophomore designated hitter Michael Murray followed by back-to-back singles by Dias and Gencarelli produced another Raider run in the sixth.

Senior first baseman Vin Troisi, Olah, Murray and Dias walked in the seventh to up the Rutgers-Newark lead to 7-1.

Gencarelli went three for five with three RBIs to pace the Raiders' 13-hit attack. Dias, Troisi and Murray chipped in two hits apiece with Murray scoring three times.

Rutgers-Newark (3-6), winners of two in a row, takes on Whittier College in a noon doubleheader on Wednesday.
