Box Score NEWARK, NJ – Junior designated hitter
Michael Murray paced Rutgers University-Newark with three hits, but Drew University posted a 10-7 win in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Two Scarlet Raider errors led to all of the Rangers' runs in Rutgers-Newark's debut in its home ball park to snap a 2-game winning streak.
Murray doubled and scored to start a 2-run fourth inning for the Raiders, but Drew rang up seven runs on four singles, two walks and a pair of costly infield errors to take a 7-2 lead in the top of the fifth.
But Rutgers-Newark rallied for five runs over the next two innings to level the score. A 2-run double to center field by senior first baseman
Vin Troisi highlighted a 3-run rally by the Raiders in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Murray and senior rightfielder
Jimmy Napolitano knotted the game at 7-7.
The Rangers (7-7) got the winning runs against sophomore lefthander
Angel Paulino in the seventh. A lead-off single, a 1-out error and a walk loaded the bases before the winning run was scored when sophomore pinch hitter Anthony Feltre was hit by a pitch. Freshman centerfielder Marc Cohen lifted a sacrifice fly to center field before junior shortstop Steven Kowalski capped the spree with an RBI double to center field.
Rookie reliever
Chas Bohannon closed out the game, getting a strike out to end the seventh before blanking Drew over the final two frames thanks to a defensive jewel. In the eighth, Napolitano fielded a single and fired to shortstop
Gerry Patrizio who nailed a Drew runner at the plate for the final out.
Rutgers-Newark (5-12) hosts DeSales University at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Riverfront Stadium before travelling to The College of New Jersey for its New Jersey Athletic Conference opener on Thursday.
