Box Score UNION, NJ – Rutgers University-Newark junior
Andrew Nasti carried a shutout into the bottom of the seventh against Kean, but Cougar third baseman Andy Lopez homered in his final two at bats to lift the Cougars to a 6-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference win in Jim Hynes Stadium.
A day after the Scarlet Raiders (9-17, NJAC 3-5) upended No. 6 nationally ranked Kean in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, they got a strong starting showing from their right-handed ace only to get blanked in a complete-game victory by Cougar junior righthander Mike Daley (5-0).
Lopez hammered a home run over the left field wall to open the seventh inning before stroking a 3-run shot to left in the eighth to greet freshman reliever
Chas Bohannon. Bohannon replaced Nasti (3-4) after the Cougars posted two singles and an RBI double against the starter to open the eighth.
Senior designated hitter
Kevin Olah doubled in the fourth inning for Rutgers-Newark's only extra-base hit against Daley who struck out four, walked two and stranded 10 on base. Daley got out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth by notching a game-ending strike out to preserve the shutout.
Eight Raiders singled in the contest and Rutgers-Newark had two hits in an inning three times only to get blanked for the first time in 23 games.
Nasti gave up 10 hits while striking out two and walking no one in 7-1/3 innings. Bohannon gave up a single and an RBI triple before getting out of the eighth.
Centerfielder Matt Meleo went four for four to pace the 13-hit attack by Kean (19-7, NJAC 4-4).
