Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers University-Newark saw a New Jersey Athletic Conference playoff berth slip away as William Paterson notched an 8-5 and 5-3 doubleheader sweep on Rutgers University's Bainton Field.

The Scarlet Raiders (13-24, NJAC 6-12) would have secured one of six NJAC Championship Tournament slots if they could have earned a split against the Pioneers (13-19-1, NJAC 7-10-1) on Senior Day, but the twin loss curtailed a late-season surge which carried Rutgers-Newark into the final weekend with hopes of getting to the post-season.  WPU slipped into the final playoff berth.

IN GAME TWO, senior first baseman Vin Troisi capped his career with a 2-run double in his final at-bat in Scarlet & Black to give him 100 hits, but WPU sophomore righthander Frankie Colasante earned his second save of the day despite being greeted by Troisi's drive to centerfield.  Troisi piled up 51 hits this season while hitting a team-leading .362.

Junior leftfielder Michael Murray went three for four to pace the Raiders' 8-hit attack.  He scored Rutgers-Newark's first run in the fourth inning on a single to left field by junior third baseman Nick Gencarelli which put the score at 3-1.

Freshman starter Rafael Totesautt (1-3) worked into the sixth inning, allowing six hits while striking out two and walking three.  The Pioneers got to him for three runs in the fourth on a hit batter, two singles and a double.

Senior rightfielder Jimmy Napolitano came on to coax an inning-ending double play in the sixth and set off a string of three straight innings in which the Raiders turned two.  Gencarelli and Troisi turned a third-to-first-to-third double play in the seventh before Gencarelli started an inning-ending play in the eight.

Senior shortstop Rob Pasternak, who went three for four, delivered the game-winning RBI triple in the eighth and scored on a Raider infield error to push the Pioneer lead to 5-1.

WPU junior righthander Kevin Cowan (3-2) picked up the win by going 7/1/3 innings while yielding six hits and two walks against a pair of strikeouts.

IN THE OPENER, sophomore rightfielder Cameron Dias singled home sophomore shortstop Ryan MacFarlane with two out in the sixth inning to knot the score at 5-5, but a 2-out, 2-run homer to left field by sophomore first baseman Alex Derner proved to be the difference.

MacFarlane stole three bases in the game giving him 23 steals in just 24 attempts on the season.  The total steals in a season rank fifth in the Raider record book.

Rutgers-Newark rallied from a 4-1 deficit by posting four hits during a 3-run outburst in the fourth inning.  Senior designated hitter Kevin Olah, Gencarelli, sophomore second baseman Gerry Patrizio and Troisi delivered the hits against WPU starter Josh Jensen.

Every Raider starter hit safely as Rutgers-Newark out-hit the Pioneers, 12-7, but the home team stranded 11 baserunners.  Troisi and Napolitano each went two for five.

MacFarlane (0-3) took the loss in relief of sophomore starter Chris Nichols.
