IN THE OPENER, sophomore
Ryan MacFarlane, the regular centerfielder in his second start and third appearance of the season on the mound, kept the Scarlet Raiders close. He scattered eight hits while striking out two and walking one in 7-1/3 innings before freshman
Chas Bohannon came on to post the final two outs.
Sophomore leftfielder
Cameron Dias went three for four to pace the Raiders, but Red Hawk seniors Louis Pimpinella and John Silvestri combined to limit Rutgers-Newark to six singles while striking out eight and walking just one.
Dias helped the Raiders gain an early 2-1 lead when he led off the second with a single before junior third baseman
Nick Gencarelli was hit by a pitch. The duo advanced on a wild pitch before senior catcher
Steve Tamayo lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Sophomore shortstop
Gerry Patrizio delivered the second run with a 2-out single to right field.
The Raiders loaded the bases in the ninth on a single by Dias, an infield error and a 2-out pinch-hit single to left field by
Rowland Goodman, but Silvestri struck out his third batter of the inning to end the threat and the game.
A 2-run, 2-out single through the middle by senior second baseman Lou Martini in the fifth proved to be the game-winning hit.
IN THE NIGHTCAP, Dias again went three for four but a furious ninth inning rally fell short.
Red Hawk reliever P.J. Jennings was greeted with back-to-back singles by freshman catcher
Josh Cote and Patrizio before loading the bases with a walk to MacFarlane. Junior righthander Anthony Altieri came on to survive a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of senior first baseman
Vin Troisi, a walk to Murray to reload the bases and an RBI single through the left side of the infield by Dias. But Altieri got consecutive pop fly outs to end the game.
Rutgers-Newark took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning on a walk to Troisi, a double by Murray, an RBI single by Dias, a sacrifice fly by senior centerfielder
Jimmy Napolitano and an RBI double by Gencarelli.
The Red Hawks bounced back to take the lead for keeps in the bottom of the sixth against Raider freshman starter
Rafael Totesautt (0-1). An infield error and a walk set up back-to-back RBI singles by junior catcher Anderson Rosa and senior shortstop Cody Pace.
MSU tacked on another run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to take an 8-3 lead into the final inning. Three Raider errors lead to four unearned runs in the loss.
The Raiders (7-16, NJAC 1-4) out-hit the Red Hawks (8-11, NJAC 3-3), 10-9, with Gencarelli going two for five.
