NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers University-Newark freshman Catherine Popow and Danielle Merritt won their singles matches and teamed for a doubles victory, but Kean University earned a 6-3 New Jersey Athletic Conference win on The Golden Dome Courts.

Popow blanked Cougar senior Erin Hendricks, 6-0, 6-0, on the No. 1 court while Merritt battled to a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 victory over freshman Alyssa Peterson on the second flight for the only singles wins for the Scarlet Raiders (0-9, NJAC 0-5).
 
The rookie duo got past Kean's freshman pair of Shruti Nadkarni and Ayana Bell, 9-7, on the No. 2 doubles court.
 
Raider senior Yara Elsekhely was forced to default the No. 3 singles match to Cougar freshman Andrea Mendez and Kean (3-2, NJAC 1-0) took the bottom three singles matches in straight sets after winning two of three doubles contests.
 
Rutgers-Newark is slated to play The College of New Jersey (5-0, NJAC 5-0) at 4 p.m. on Thursday on The Golden Dome Courts.
