Marks has three hits, two runs in Scarlet Raiders' 11-9 loss to Redlands

REDLANDS, CA. – Freshman catcher Justin Marks (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) had three hits, scored two runs and drove in one run and junior second baseman Gerry Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) had two RBI, but Rutgers-Newark suffered an 11-9 setback at the hands of the University of the Redlands Sunday afternoon at the Yard.

The loss dropped the Scarlet Raiders' record to 1-4 on the young season.

Besides Marks and Patrizio, the Scarlet Raiders received two hits and an RBI from both junior left fielder Billy Taylor (Allendale, NJ/Northern Valley-Old Tappan) and sophomore first baseman Chas Bohannon (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton). Junior shortstop Ryan MacFarlane (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) added two doubles, as the Scarlet Raiders pounded out 13 hits against three Redlands pitchers.

The Scarlet Raiders fell behind early, but then managed to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI double from Marks and an RBI single from senior third baseman Nick Gencarelli (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock).

But Redlands (13-6) exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth, capped by a three-run double from designated hitter Christopher Scalisi, who had three hits. Jordan Dresmer had three hits and four RBI for the winners.

The Scarlet Raiders cut the lead to 10-9 with three runs in the seventh on a two-run single from Patrizio and another run scoring via an error.

Freshman right-hander Mike Zibrin (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) pitched the first five innings and suffered the setback in his collegiate debut. Zibrin allowed nine earned runs and 11 hits in his five innings.

Freshman right-hander Luis Rojas (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) pitched very well in relief, going three innings and allowing three hits and one unearned run while striking out four.

The Scarlet Raiders have Monday off and return to action on their California trip Tuesday afternoon when they face California Lutheran at 2:30 p.m. PDT (5:30 p.m. EDT).
