WHITTIER, CA. – Senior third baseman Nick Gencarelli (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock HS) had three hits and an RBI and junior right fielder Cameron Dias (Madison, NJ/Madison) delivered two hits and two RBI, leading Rutgers-Newark to a 6-4 win over Whittier College Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field.

The win enabled the Scarlet Raiders to snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 2-5 on the season. Whittier dropped to 3-17 overall.

The Scarlet Raiders used some late magic to get past Whittier, scoring two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to secure the victory.

In the seventh inning, Dias had an RBI single and Gencarelli added an RBI double that gave the Scarlet Raiders a 4-3 lead.

After Whittier tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, the Scarlet Raiders scored two more runs, thanks to an RBI double from senior first baseman Rowland Goodman (West Caldwell, NJ/James J. Caldwell) and an unearned run, when Goodman later scored on an error.

The Scarlet Raiders banged out 14 hits in the win. Besides Gencarelli and Dias, R-N received two hits and an RBI from sophomore designated hitter Josh Cote (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) and two hits, one run and a stolen base from junior second baseman Gerry Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery).

Sophomore right-hander Chas Bohannon (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) pitched just two-thirds of an inning in relief of senior starter Jonathan Dominguez (Newark, NJ/East Side), but didn't allow a run to earn the victory.

Freshman righty Luis Rojas (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) continued his fine pitching for the Scarlet Raiders, hurling two hitless and scoreless innings, striking out three, to earn the save. Rojas has now allowed just one earned run in three relief appearances, striking out 10 in 7 1/3 innings.

Dominguez was solid in his second start of the season, going 5 1/3 innings, allowing just four hits and three runs, walking three and striking out four. Senior righty Shane Nolan (Livingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) pitched one inning in relief, allowing one earned run.

Dylan DeBrouwer had two RBI for Whittier. Ben Moody took the loss.

The Scarlet Raiders continue their California road trip with a game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday afternoon.
