Scarlet Raiders take two-of-three with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to conclude Calif. road trip

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Rutgers-Newark baseball team concluded its nine-game California road trip on Saturday with a split of the Scarlet Raiders' doubleheader against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The Scarlet Raiders (4-6) defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 13-2, in the first game Saturday, then dropped the nightcap, 11-10.

The Scarlet Raiders also defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 11-7, on Friday afternoon, giving them two wins in three games during their stop in Claremont before heading home.

On Friday, the Scarlet Raiders scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the sixth to earn the victory.

In the first rally, freshman catcher Justin Marks (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield), sophomore first baseman Chas Bohannon (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) and junior outfielder Billy Taylor (Allendale, NJ/Northern Valley-Old Tappan) each delivered an RBI single.

In the sixth inning outburst, Bohannon delivered a two-run single, Marks had an RBI double and senior third baseman Nick Gencarelli (Pompton Plains, NJ/Pequannock) had an RBI single.

Marks had four hits, including that double, and had three RBI, while Bohannon had two hits and three RBI. Gencarelli added three hits and an RBI.

The two rallies made a winning pitcher out of freshman left-hander JR Hilcher (Bloomfield, NJ/St. Mary's of Rutherford), who pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief of starter Andrew Nasti (Weehawken, NJ/Weehawken), allowing just two hits and one unearned run to earn his first collegiate win.

Freshman right-hander Yanni Vayas (Warren, NJ/St. Joseph of Metuchen) pitched 1 1/3 innings and freshman righty Dan Murphy (South Amboy, NJ/South Amboy) hurled one inning of scoreless relief to nail down the win.

Nolan Anderson had four hits, including a homer, and three RBI for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (1-22).

In the opener on Saturday, the Scarlet Raiders banged out a season-high 21 hits in gaining the win. They scored five runs in the second inning and seven more in the fourth to seize control of the game.

In the second inning, sophomore outfielder Gerry DeFilippo (East Hanover, NJ/Oratory Prep) had a two-run triple and Bohannon, junior outfielder Cameron Dias (Madison, NJ/Madison) and senior shortstop Ryan MacFarlane (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township) each had an RBI single.

In the seven-run fourth, freshman outfielder Anthony Perconte (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) had a two-run single and Bohannon had a two-run double. Taylor and DeFilippo each had an RBI single in the rally.

For the game, Perconte had three hits, scored twice and drove in two, MacFarlane had three hits and scored twice, Bohannon had two hits and three RBI and Gencarelli had two hits and scored twice.

Junior righty Chris Nichols (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) scattered seven hits and allowed one earned run over seven innings to earn the victory, his third of the young season. Freshman lefty Dominick Fazio (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley-Demarest) pitched two innings of relief, allowing one unearned run and striking out four.

In the nightcap Saturday, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to steal the come-from-behind victory. MacKenzie Menthen was the big bat for the winners, delivering four hits and six RBI.

The Scarlet Raiders received two hits and two RBI from sophomore third baseman Brian Kokos (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley), two RBI from senior first baseman Rowland Goodman (West Caldwell, NJ/James J. Caldwell), a solo homer from sophomore catcher Josh Cote (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) and RBI singles from senior catcher Dan Lopez (Union City, NJ/Union City) and Perconte.

Bohannon suffered the setback pitching in relief of freshman starter and right-hander Mike Zibrin (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North). Freshman righty Luis Rojas (Union, NJ/Union Catholic) continued his stellar relief pitching, hurling three innings, allowing just two hits and striking out two.

The Scarlet Raiders now return home to face Purchase College at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium Monday afternoon at 4 p.m.
