Late R-N rally comes up one run short vs. Baruch, 5-4

BASEBALL

Seniot third baseman Nick Gencarelli had two hits and two RBI in the Scarlet Raiders' 5-4 loss to Baruch Thursday afternoon
Box Score NEWARK, N.J. -- Senior third baseman Nick Gencarelli (Pompton Plains, NJ) and junior shortstop Ryan MacFarlane (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) each had two hits and two RBI, all coming in the final two innings, but Rutgers-Newark dropped a heartbreaking 5-4 decision to Baruch College at Bears & Eagles Stadium Thursday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Scarlet Raiders' record to 5-8 overall, while Baruch improved to 4-10 overall.

The Scarlet Raiders fell behind after the sixth inning by a 4-0 count and went into the final inning down 5-2, but scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to draw within a run. Gencarelli and MacFarlane each drove in a run with singles in that rally. The Scarlet Raiders had runners on second and third with two out, but couldn't get the clutch hit to send the home team home victorious.

Besides Gencarelli and MacFarlane, the Scarlet Raiders received two hits from sophomore first baseman Chas Bohannon (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) and a hit and two stolen bases from junior second baseman Gerry Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery).

Sophomore left-hander Rafael Totesautt (Weehawken, NJ/Weehawken) was the starter and loser for the Scarlet Raiders. Totesautt breezed through the first four innings without allowing a run or a hit, but gave up an unearned run on two hits in the fifth inning, before Baruch erupted for three runs on four hits in the sixth inning off Totesautt (0-2) and relief pitcher freshman Mike Zibrin (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) to take a 4-0 lead.

Freshman lefty JR Hilcher (Bloomfield, NJ/St. Mary's of Rutherford) pitched one and 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, while freshman Dan Murphy (South Amboy, NJ/South Amboy) pitched one inning, allowing just an unearned run, as the Scarlet Raiders' young bullpen continues to impress.

Cameron Kitt (1-2) was the starter and winner for Baruch, going the first 7 1/3 innings, before surrendering to relievers Joseph Cali and then Ryan Smith, who struck out the final batter of the game to earn the save, his first of the season.

The Scarlet Raiders begin their New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule Saturday with a doubleheader at Rowan, with the first game slated for 11:30 a.m.
