Freshman Marks bright spot in R-N's NJAC doubleheader setback

BASEBALL

Junior centerfielder Billy Taylor had four hits and two runs scored in the doubleheader loss to Rowan
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLASSBORO, N.J. -- Freshman catcher Justin Marks (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) continued his solid hitting with four hits in nine at-bats and two RBI, but the Rutgers-Newark baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Rowan Sunday afternoon at the Rowan University baseball field, losing the first game, 5-4, and the nightcap by a 10-2 margin.

The doubleheader dip set the Scarlet Raiders' overall record at 5-10. They were the first two games of the New Jersey Athletic Conference regular season. The Profs improved to 11-5 overall in winning their first two league games.

The Scarlet Raiders dropped the first game of the doubleheader in heartbreaking fashion, losing a 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, when the Profs exploded for four runs.

Freshman right-hander Luis Rojas (Union, NJ/Union Catholic), who had been brilliant during the first week of the season, earning NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week, got roughed up a little by the Profs as Rojas tried to close out the game. Rojas gave up three earned runs to start the ninth, giving way to senior righty Shane Nolan (Livingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), who suffered the loss, falling to 0-1 on the season.

Senior right-hander Andrew Nasti (Weehawken, NJ/Weehawken) pitched well as the Scarlet Raiders' starter, pitching 6 1/3 innings, scattering six hits and just one earned run, striking out two and walking one.

Nasti gave way to Rojas, who allowed just one earned run over 7 1/3 innings in three prior appearances. Rojas got out of trouble in the seventh inning by getting the first batter he faced to ground into a double play, then all three batters he faced in the eighth inning. However, Rojas ran into trouble in the ninth.

Monny Strickland singled to lead off the inning, followed by walks to Eric Oliver and Nick Krieger to load the bases. Nolan entered the game at that point, replacing Rojas. Pinch-hitter Steven Petriello singled to right field to score Strickland, cutting the lead to 4-2. Ryan Pavlick reached on a fielder's choice, driving home the second run of the rally, with Petriello retired at second base on the play. Jason Clapper then also reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Krieger with the tying run. Kevin McMenamin then reached on an error and Casey Grimes drove in the game-winning run with a single up the middle, scoring Clapper to give the Profs the come-from-behind win.

Richie Suarez pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn his third victory of the season without a setback.

The Scarlet Raiders scored one run in the third inning, then two more in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. Marks had an RBI single in the rally and junior centerfielder Billy Taylor (Allendale, NJ/Northern Valley-Old Tappan), who had two hits, scored the other run on a wild pitch.

The Scarlet Raiders pushed the lead to 4-0 on an RBI single from Taylor in the top of the sixth.

Marks led the way in the Scarlet Raiders' 11-hit attack with 3-for-5 with an RBI. Taylor and junior second baseman Gerry Patrizio (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) had two hits each. Junior shortstop Ryan MacFarlane (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) had a hit and two stolen bases in vain. Grimes, one of the top returning players in the NJAC, had two hits and two RBI for the winners.

In the second game, the Profs scored three runs in the bottom of the first, three more in the home fourth and four in the sixth to come away with the sweep.

McMenamin was the hitting star for the Profs with three hits, including two doubles, and six RBI. Grimes had two hits and two RBI and Pavlik had two hits and scored three runs.

Junior right fielder Cameron Dias (Madison, NJ/Madison) had two hits and an RBI to lead the Scarlet Raiders. Taylor had two more hits and Marks had a single and an RBI in vain. MacFarlane also had two hits.

Junior right-hander Chris Nichols (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) was the starter and loser for R-N, getting roughed up for nine hits and nine earned runs over 5 1/3 innings, suffering his first setback after two wins. Freshman righty Dan Murphy (South Amboy, NJ/South Amboy) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Ryan Sharkey pitched six innings, surrendering eight hits and two earned runs to get the victory and improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action Monday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium, when they play host to Muhlenberg College. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
