LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 11, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team improved to 4-3 on the 2018 season with a thrilling 6-4 10-inning win Saturday at Occidental College in Los Angeles.
Â
Senior
Adam Tricarico singled with one out in the 10th, moved to second on a groundout and came around to score on a big-time double off the bat of senior
Anthony Perconte with two outs. Junior
Luke Magliaro followed with a double of his own to plate Perconte for some insurance, and sophomore hurler
Michael Katims struck out two in a perfect final inning of work to lock up the victory.
Â
The hosts scored the first three runs of the game, plating a pair in the first and one more in the second. Rutgers-Newark broke through in the top half of the third inning when senior
Brian Boulineau belted a two-run home run with one out. Junior
Ryan Zucker – who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning – crossed home on the Boulineau bomb which was his first of the season.
Â
Scarlet Raider starter
Jason Palmeri settled down after a rocky start to go five innings. Palmeri struck out five and walked three. Reliever
Casey Hanley followed with two innings of work, giving up one run and one hit.
Â
Rutgers-Newark tied the game in the top half of the fifth when sophomore
Connor Clare singled in Zucker who had reached on an error earlier in the inning.
Â
The Scarlet Raiders pulled in front in the eighth inning. Tricarico set the table with a leadoff double, and an infield single from
Dominic Magliaro put runners at the corners. Perconte came through with an RBI fielder's choice, giving Rutgers-Newark a 4-3 lead. However, Newark's lead was short lived as the Tigers pulled even with a run in the bottom of the eighth, setting the stage for extras.
Â
Rutgers-Newark racked up 11 hits in the game, getting two apiece from
Dominic Magliaro,
Luke Magliaro and Tricarico. Boulineau drove in two with his two-run shot in the third, and Perconte went 1-for-5 with two RBI, one run and one stolen base.
Â
Katims did sterling work on the hill after Hanley, going the final three innings. He struck out four and allowed nary a run or a hit to pick up his first win of the season.
Rutgers-Newark returns to the diamond Monday at 2:30 p.m. (Pacific) at Cal-Lutheran.
