Bullpen Dazzles in Baseball Loss at Cal Lutheran

Box Score Box Score

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (March 12, 2018) –
The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team was defeated by a score of 5-1 Monday at California Lutheran University.

Despite the loss, the Scarlet Raider relieving duo of freshman Michael Matusz and junior Timothy Kales shined, throwing 6.1 scoreless innings.

The Scarlet Raiders drop to 4-4 on the season and will return to the diamond Tuesday at the University of La Verne (3 p.m. PST). Cal Lutheran – ranked No. 2 in the nation to start the season – improves to 11-9.

The Kingsmen did all of their scoring in the second inning, pushing across five runs on three hits, an error, two walks and two hit batters.

California Lutheran starting pitcher Troy Frazier kept the Scarlet Raiders at bay, scattering four hits over five scoreless innings of work to earn the win. Veteran Danny Iannaccone singled and junior Ryan Zucker walked with two outs in the third, but Frazier was able to get out of it, and the Raiders loaded the bases in the fifth thanks to a pair of walks and a base hit from junior Luke Magliaro, but they were unable to break through.

Matusz came on in relief in the second inning and did a nice job for the Scarlet Raiders. He was able to overcome some trouble in that second frame to limit the damage to five, and he put up zeroes in the third, fourth and fifth before calling it a day with one out in the sixth. His final line was 3.2 innings pitched, two hits, two strikeouts and three walks. He did not allow a run.

The CLU bullpen was able to face the minimum in innings seven and eight, and Kales did his part, getting eight outs in 2.2 hitless innings. He walked only one and was able to get four groundball outs.

Rutgers-Newark scored its run in the ninth inning when Magliaro singled home senior Anthony Perconte with two outs.

The Raiders totaled five hits in the game, and the Newark offense was led by Luke Magliaro who had two knocks and an RBI. Tricarico, Iannaccone and Dominic Magliaro had the other Scarlet Raider hits, and Zucker drew a pair of walks.

CLU totaled five hits in the game as well, and second baseman Tanner Wright led the way with two hits, two RBI, a walk and a run scored.
