Box Score Auburndale, FL I The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team rebounded from a tough loss last night to defeat Framingham State University with an explosive offense this afternoon, 12-8. The Scarlet Raiders improve to 3-4 while the Rams fall to 6-5.
Rutgers-Newark was led by the top of its order.
Ryan Zucker went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs,
Dominic Magliaro was 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs, and two RBI, and
Luke Magliaro went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run, and an RBI.
Kevin Tamsula and
Connor Clare each also contributed a pair of RBI.
Eric Morales picked up the win with three big innings in relief of starter
Luis Rojas. Morales went three strong while allowing one run and striking out four.
Michael Matusz and
Marcus James closed out the game with one scoreless frame apiece.
The Raiders return to action tomorrow at 2:45 p.m. against the University of Maine-Farmington.
Despite trailing 3-0 after a half inning, R-N rallied in the bottom of the first and second. In the first, Tamsula singled home
Dominic Magliaro to make it 3-1 before the hosts exploded for five runs in the second. A fielding error allowed
Gerardo A. Reyes to cross the plate before Zucker drove an RBI single up the middle and
Dominic Magliaro followed with a big two RBI double into the left-center field gap. Tamsula then capped the frame with a fielder's choice groundout to short with
Dominic Magliaro scoring to extend the lead to 6-3.
Framingham State struck right back, crossing the dish four times in the third and fourth combined to retake a slim 7-6 edge and knock Rojas out of the contest.
Still, there would be one more tie and lead change as the squads battled back-and-forth. Clare scored on a throwing error in the fifth to knot the game at 7-7 before Zucker added another base hit, this time driving home two runners to put the Scarlet Raiders in front for good.
The Rams managed to halve their deficit with a run in the seventh, but Rutgers-Newark put the game away in the bottom of the eighth.
Luke Magliaro singled through the right side to bring home Zucker followed by a Clare two-bagger down the left field line that brought in both Magliaros, extending the lead to 12-8.
