Zaleck Highlights NJAC Awards With NJAC Player of the Year

EWING, NJ | The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) announced its 2021 all-conference teams today and the Rutgers University-Newark squad scooped up four total honors, headlined by Andrew Zaleck who was named NJAC Player of the Year for the second year in a row. 

Joining Zaleck on the list is Arvind Kumar and Justin Tuohy who each earned NJAC First Team honors. Daniel Quay rounded out the awards with an NJAC Second Team nod. 

Zaleck earns Player of the Year honors for the second straight year. The sophomore ranks second in the NJAC in points per set (5.12) and kills per set (4.28), fifth in hitting percentage (.307), and sixth in service aces per set (0.48). He led Rutgers-Newark to a three-set sweep of Kean in the NJAC title match with 18 kills, five digs, and three blocks. Zaleck was also key in the Scarlet Raiders' run to the Continental Volleyball Conference semifinals. This season in the NJAC he was named NJAC Player of the Week once. 

During the opening week of the season, Zaleck set record numbers en route to a 3-1 win over NJCU which earned him Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week.

Kumar had a stellar year as he tallied 118 kills, good for second on the team. He also excelled from behind the service stripe as he picked up 21 service aces which placed him second on the team, behind Justin Tuohy (33). Kumar also boasted a .255 hitting percentage in 12 matches. 

Tuohy continued to set his teammates well in his second season with the Scarlet Raiders. Tuohy tallied 383 assists this season and broke his career-best with 58 assists in a single match in the win over #11 Juniata. He played in all 13 matches this season and led the team with 33 service aces.

Rounding out the awards for the Scarlet Raiders was Daniel Quay who played in and started all 13 matches for his team and led the team with 39 total blocks (6 solo). Offensively, Quay added 78 kills and 12 assists. 

The Scarlet Raiders will now await to see if they make the NCAA Division III Tournament which will be released on Monday, April 12 at 10 a.m.
