#14 Men's Volleyball Stumbles Against #15 Marymount, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ | The injury plagued #14 Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team stumbled in their opening Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) match, 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 26-24), to #15 Marymount University. The loss drops the Scarlet Raiders to 5-4, 0-1 while the Saints improved to 10-4, 3-1.

As a team, the Scarlet Raiders hit .367 for the match with Daniel Quay leading the way with a .600 hit percentage. Andrew Zaleck led the team with 13 kills while Derek Au paced the team with 22 assists.

In the opening set, the Scarlet Raiders fell behind early as the Saints jumped out to a lead. After a timeout called by head coach Aidan Albrecht the Scarlet Raiders found their groove and began to exploit the openings on the court. Daniel Quay and Andrew Zaleck brought the Scarlet Raiders within one, 20-19. Despite the uptick in offense by Rutgers-Newark, Marymount survived and took a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set was nearly a carbon copy of the opening set as Marymount found themselves in the lead with the Scarlet Raiders having to play catchup. Derek Au found gaps in the Saints' defense and was able to slip a few tallies into the Scarlet Raiders' column, however, a late push by Marymount held the Scarlet Raiders at bay to go up 2-0 in the match.

Marymount controlled the pace of play in the third set and held a five-point lead down the stretch, however, the Scarlet Raiders put together a 3-0 run which forced Marymount to use one of their timeouts to try to slow down Rutgers-Newark. Out of the timeout, Jasjeet Singh picked up a pair of blocks to knot the set up at 20. Alex Boulin put the Scarlet Raiders in front briefly before Marymount tied it at 21. The Saints would battle their way to the win after a error by the Scarlet Raiders set up Marymount for the winning point.
