Eric Recchia Powers Rutgers-Newark Past CCNY on Opening Day

NEWARK, NJ | Eric Recchia had an outstanding day, going 4-for-5 in the season opener against the City College of NY (CCNY), as Rutgers University-Newark took down the Beavers, 7-2, at Weekquahic Park. 

Rutgers-Newark (1-0) used 10 hits to score seven runs while playing a clean game in the field with no errors. Armando Alvarez also had a multi-hit day for the Scarlet Raiders, finishing 2-for-3. Marcus James got the start for Rutgers-Newark and in his two innings of action, tallied four strikeouts. 

CCNY (0-3) used five hits to tally two runs and recorded one error in the outfield. At the plate, Chris Lamond led the way with two hits while Brandon Paider struckout three batters and allowed two runs from the hill.

The Scarlet Raiders opened up scoring in the first inning when Ricky Gonzalez crossed home plate via a wild pitch after reaching on a walk. In the second inning, Rutgers-Newark extended their lead with three more runs. Jesse Evensen hit a ground ball through the left side before Gonzalez used a sacrifice fly to right field to score another. The final run of the inning crossed on CCNY's lone error of the game after the center fielder dropped a fly ball by Angelo Mascolo

CCNY got on the board in the top of the third, however, the Scarlet Raiders answered back with another run in the bottom of the inning on a Matthew Rypkema RBI. The Beavers would go on to add another run to their tally before the Scarlet Raiders added another pair to win their season opener.
