Baseball Suffers Their First Loss of the Season to Stevens, 5-3

NEWARK, NJ | Robert Golzalez led the Scarlet Raiders with two hits in the narrow 5-3 loss to Stevens at Weequahic Park on Friday afternoon. The loss dropped the Scarlet Raiders down to 1-1 on the year while Stevens improved to 4-2. 

Connor Baksh tallied one RBI in his lone plate appearance with Armando Alvarez, Paul Recchia, Jon Rosado, and Matthew Rypkema all recording a hit. Colin Thomson got the start on the bump and hurled 4.2 innings and allowed five hits with five strikeouts. 

The Scarlet Raiders held the Ducks to two scoreless innings before breaking the deadlock in the bottom of the second. In his first collegiate at bat, Paul Recchia hit a triple to right center before scoring on a wild pitch. The Ducks leveled the playing field with a run in the 4th before a two-run homer in the top of the 5th blew the game open in favor of Stevens. 

Rutgers-Newark cut their lead down to just two in the 8th with an RBI single by Gonzalez, however, Stevens tallied another run in the 9th. The Scarlet Raiders tried to rally in the bottom of the 9th but were held to just one run as they were unable to complete the comeback.
