Baseball Keeps On Rolling With 15-11 Win Over Cairn

LANGHORNE, PA | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball squad used a late comeback to steal a win from Cairn, 15-11, and extend their win streak to eight in a row before they open NJAC play on Sunday. The win moves the Scarlet Raiders to 15-4 overall while Cairn falls to 6-12. 

Robert Gonzalez finished 3-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs. Joining Gonzalez with two RBIs were Eric Recchia, Matthew Rypkema, and Armando Alvarez.  From the bump, Alex Couto (1-0) earned the win after pitching two innings with three strikeouts. 

The Scarlet Raiders opened with a strong four-run inning with RBIs from Gonzalez, Alvarez and Reid Duffus. Gonzalez got the scoring started with an RBI single up the middle to score Recchia before Michael Weinbel capitalized on a wild pitch to put the Scarlet Raiders up 2-0.  Alvarez would go on to bring Gonzalez home with a single through the left side which allowed Duffus to plate Rypkema with a single to shallow right field. 

In the top of the 4th, Rutgers-Newark added a pair after Cairn opened their scoring ledger in the bottom of the 3rd. Cairn responded with three runs in the 4th to cut the lead down to just two. Gonzalez was back at the plate and continued is quality outing with an RBI double to center field.

Cairn continued their scoring streak in the 6th, scoring four runs before adding a pair in the 7th. The Scarlet Raiders went into the top of the 9th down a run, however, an error broke the dam as they would go on to plate five runs behind a 2 RBI single from Rypkema. Vince Taylor came in from the bullpen and shut Cairn down to complete the comeback victory.

The Scarlet Raiders will travel to Montclair State University on Sunday for their first NJAC action of the season.
