Men's Volleyball Opens the Season With Strong Showing Against Saint Elizabeth, 3-0

MORRISTOWN, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball squad opened its 2024 campaign this afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of Saint Elizabeth University, 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-21).

Rutgers-Newark (1-0) was led by Martin Chromulak's match-high 9 kills on .389 hitting. Amir Johnson and Lucas Blanco added eight and seven kills, respectively. Derek Au and Kaden Komine split setting duties and tallied 22 and 13 assists. Defensively, Fernando Paredes tallied 9 digs. 

The Scarlet Raiders started its season off with a powerful showing, hitting .500 as a team and tallying 15 kills in the opening set. Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 9-5 lead over the eagles before stretching its lead via a 7-1 run highlighted by a pair of service aces from Au. Saint Elizabeth made a push, scoring three straight points, however, Johnson ended the streak and sent the Scarlet Raiders on the winning path to go up 1-0 in the match. 

Rutgers-Newark rebounded from an early deficit and took the lead with a 6-1 run. With the Eagles making a comeback attempt, the Scarlet Raiders used another run to close out the set and go up 2-0 in the match. 

In the third set, Rutgers-Newark remained zoned in and tallied 14 kills as a team. The Eagles, held an early lead but the Scarlet Raiders used a 6-0 run sparked by Pavlo Chernyshov's kill. Saint Elizabeth wouldn't go away quietly and cut the lead down to 20-18 via a service error. Josh Ledesma and Johnson would close out the match.

The men's volleyball squad returns to action on Wednesday, January 24 when they travel to take on SUNY New Paltz.
