Men's Volleyball Drops Non-Conference Bout to #13 New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, NY | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season this evening to #13 New Paltz, 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-20. 

Rutgers-Newark (1-1) hit .197 as a team with its highest percentage (.412) coming in the first set. Lucas Blanco paced the team with 10 kills while hitting .304 and Derek Au tallied a team-high 20 assists. Defensively, Juan Silva picked up three blocks, one solo. New Paltz was led by Pat Wing's eight kills and Matt Marusza's 14 assists. 

New Paltz jumped out to an early 10-5 lead over the Scarlet Raiders, however, Rutgers-Newark chipped away at the lead and trailed 22-19 late in the set. Blanco picked up a kill to bring them within two but New Paltz closed the door and went up 1-0 in the match. 

The Scarlet Raiders offense stalled in the second set, tallying just 14 points after New Paltz used several runs to take a lead that they refused to relinquish. 

Rutgers-Newark held a 6-5 lead to open the set, but New Paltz used a 7-1 run to break free of the Scarlet Raiders. Martin Chromulak and Amir Johnson each tallied a kill late to bring the Scarlet Raiders within one before New Paltz used a 4-1 to widen the gap between the two squads and claim the third set. 

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday, January 27 where they will head to Utica, NY to take on SUNY Poly and Hilbert College in a non-conference tri-match.
