Men's Volleyball Drops Twinbill to #19 Nichols & #15 Misericordia

DALLAS, PA | The Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball team closed out the Cougar Kickoff Classic hosted by Misericordia against #19 Nichols and #15 Misericordia.

Match 1: Nichols 3, Rutgers-Newark 2 (25-21, 30-28, 26-24, 25-20, 15-12)

Rutgers-Newark (5-2) went the distance with Nichols and hit .258 as a team with Martin Chromulak leading the way with 19 kills. Derek Au led the team with 44 assists while Fernando Paredes tallied 14 digs. Nichols (10-1)   was led by Jack Normandin and also tallied 19 kills with Carlos Mercado securing 41 assists.

Rutgers-Newark used a strong 4-0 opening to create separation against Nichols early on. Nichols responded and knotted the setup at 9, but Lucas Blanco picked up a kill to propel Rutgers-Newark back into the lead. The Scarlet Raiders held a three-point lead when Nichols stormed back to trail by one, but Rutgers-Newark closed out the set via a pair of Chromulak kills.

The Scarlet Raiders went up 2-0 in the match but it didn't look that way early on in the set as Nichols went up 10-5. Later in the set, three errors tied the set at 18 which set up a back-and-forth affair. Chromulak and Blanco teamed up to put Rutgers-Newark ahead which allowed them to fend off Nichols for the second set in a row.

Nichols bounced back in the third and rallied back, down 17-12. Down four, Nichols used a 10-3 run to steal the third set from the Scarlet Raiders which would set a chain of events that would force a fifth set.

Aleks Kolodziej in the fifth brought Rutgers-Newark within one but Nichols used a 3-1 run to close out the game to stave off a Scarlet Raiders comeback.

Match 2: Misericordia 3, Rutgers-Newark 1 (25-17, 25-21, 25-15, 26-24)

Rutgers-Newark (5-3) was led by Blanco's 12 kills and Au's 27 assists. Misericordia (8-2) picked up kills by Anthony DePalma and Jared Piontkowski who led the team with 12 and 11, respectively.

The Cougars opened the match with a 25-17 win as the Scarlet Raiders were not able to get their offense going in the opening set. In the second set, Rutgers-Newark bounced back with a 6-1 run to propel them into the lead. Misericordia climbed back in with a 6-2 run which brought them within one of the leading Scarlet Raiders. The Cougars tied the set at 21 before Rutgers-Newark ripped off four straight points to knot the match at one.

Rutgers-Newark's offense fell flat in the third before ultimately falling in the fourth after they were unable to rally late to overcome the Cougars.
