Rutgers-Newark Baseball Uses Offensive Outburst to Split With #18 Montclair

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball squad had a rollercoaster afternoon which saw them split the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) twinbill with #18 Montclair on Senior Day. Before the game, Connor Baksh, Justin Kahn, Roger Dantoni, Alex Couto, Ethan Calcano, Ricky Gonzalez, Robert Gonzalez, and Angelo Mascolo were all honored.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 12, Montclair 10

Rutgers-Newark (17-16, 2-11) scattered 13 hits and scored 12 runs while committing just one error to hand Montclair a crucial NJAC loss. Eric Recchia (4-for-5, 4 RBIs) and Robert Gonzalez (3-for-5, 2 RBIs) were red-hot and paced the team in hits. On the mound, Vince Taylor (2-6) picked up the win after pitching the final four innings with one strikeout and one earned run. Montclair (25-9, 7-6) used 17 hits to score 10 runs but had three blunders in the field. Sam Angelo (3-for-5) led the way for Montclair at the plate while Marcus Johns finished (3-for-5 with 2 RBIs).

Montclair took an early lead, scoring in the opening frame of the game, however, the Scarlet Raiders quickly responded in the bottom of the second when Baksh grounded out, allowing Jesse Evensen to score from third. The Red Hawks etched another tally onto the scoreboard before the Scarlet Raiders opened the game in their favor with four runs capped by an Evensen 2 RBI single up the middle.

Rutgers-Newark pushed its lead out to 6-2 before Montclair catapulted itself into the lead with five runs in the top of the fifth. The Scarlet Raiders wouldn't go quietly as Robert Gonzalez sparked a three-run rally to put his squad back in front, 9-7. The Red Hawks responded with two in the top of the sixth to knot the game at 9. Ricky Gonzalez used quick base running to put himself in a position to take advantage of a wild pitch that put Rutgers-Newark ahead for good.

Game 2: Montclair 22, Rutgers-Newark 18

Rutgers-Newark (17-17, 2-12) tallied 18 hits and scored 18 runs in the loss to the Red Hawks. Gilroy Prial exploded for four hits and four RBIs in game two while Eric Recchia added two hits and three RBIs. Montclair (26-9, 8-6) was led by Reece Malek (4-for-6, 1 RBI) and Michael Murphy (2-for-4, 5 RBIs).

The Red Hawks exploded for eight runs in the top of the second inning, however, the Scarlet Raiders didn't shrink in the moment and responded with four runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-RBI double by Prial. In the third, Joseph Bernardo hit a two RBI double to left center which was followed by an RBI single from Devin Rojas to cut the lead down to one.

Montclair bumped its total to 10 before the Scarlet Raiders took the lead with five runs in the fifth capped by a two-RBI triple from Prial and an RBI single from Eric Recchia. Rutgers-Newark added another six runs over the following three innings to knot the game up at 18 heading into the final stanza of play.

The Red Hawks kept their bats hot as they tallied four runs and kept the Scarlet Raiders off of the board in the ninth to end the game and split the NJAC doubleheader.
