Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Suarez Shines in Debut but New Paltz Takes the Win

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (4-3) competed at a high level against a talented SUNY New Paltz (4-5) squad, but service errors were ultimately their downfall in a 3-1 loss (25-17, 27-25, 25-27, 25-23).

The first set belonged to the Hawks from the start. They jumped ahead 6-2 thanks in part to service and attacking errors from the hosts. The closest that the Scarlet Raiders could get was a five point difference at 13-8, and they made a small run in the closing stages, but New Paltz was never in doubt en route to seizing a 1-0 set lead.

Set number two had a similar start, but at 7-4 in favor of the Hawks Michael Suarez entered the court for the first time as a Scarlet Raider. The highly anticipated freshman returned from injury and immediately changed the game. He quickly collected four kills and brought his team within one point of their opponents at 13-12.

However, New Paltz remained vigilant. They extended their lead back up to five at 20-15. But by this point Rutgers-Newark was firing on all cylinders. They stormed right back and knotted the score at 20. Service bounced back and forth, and a Matt Kudlinski service error sent the set to extra points. Unfortunately for the home team, the New Paltz took the first two extra points to double their set lead.

Rutgers-Newark began the third set positively. The Old Bridge, NJ duo of Aleks Kolodziej and Massimo Roco powered them to an early 7-4 advantage. Soon after, in the blink of an eye New Paltz rattled off a 10-3 run, giving them a four point lead at 17-13. This put the Scarlet Raiders in a difficult spot in a must-win set. Right on cue, they rose to the occasion and put up five straight to go in front. From there, the lead was exchanged several times in another set that went to extra points. This time it was the hosts who came out on top, sending the game to a fourth set.

Neither team would let up in set number four. There was no lead of greater than three points from start to finish. Michael Suarez continued to dominate - he ended the evening with 13 kills despite not playing in the first set. It all came down to the very end with the score tied at 23. Unfortunately for Rutgers-Newark, it was the Hawks who pulled out the crucial two points to end the game.

The Scarlet Raiders next hit the court this upcoming Thursday, February 6th. They'll travel to Glenside, PA to take on Arcadia at 6:00 PM.
