Newark, NJ – Rutgers–Newark men's soccer dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Rutgers–Camden in NJAC play on Wednesday night at Frederick Douglass Field. The loss moved the Scarlet Raiders to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the league, while the Scarlet Raptors improved to 5-3-2 and remained unbeaten in conference play at 2-0.
Camden opened the scoring early when Rohan Castillo found the back of the net in the eighth minute off an assist from Brandon Valeri. The visitors carried the one-goal lead into halftime despite Newark generating chances, including multiple shots from Ian Brown that forced Camden goalkeeper Chris Clune into action.
The Scarlet Raiders finally broke through the tough Camden defense in the 78th minute as Erick Cortes tallied his 12th goal of the season, finishing a setup from Pablo Moreno to even the match at 1-1. The momentum appeared to shift toward Newark, but Camden responded quickly. Just six minutes later, Dylan Pino scored off a combination play from Nik Grello and Miguel Graterol, giving the Scarlet Raptors a 2-1 advantage.
Newark pushed forward in the closing minutes but were unable to find the net for a game tying goa. On the night Rutgers-Newark fired a total of 20 shots with 10 on target, but Clune stood tall with nine saves to preserve the victory for Camden. Pedro Flores finished with five saves in goal for the Raiders.
The match also grew physical in the second half, with both sides combining for seven yellow cards. Newark picked up two cautions in the final 30 minutes as they battled to equalize, while Camden was issued five bookings in the half.
The Scarlet Raiders will look to regroup quickly as they continue their homestrech this Saturday, October 4th playing host to William Paterson.
