Men’s Volleyball Picks One Up and Drops One in East Mennonite Tournament

HARRISONBURG, VA | The Scarlet Raiders (12-5) rounded out their time at the Eastern Mennonite Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Randolph-Macon (13-4) and an 0-3 loss to Trine (8-6).

Match 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, Randolph-Macon 0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-21)

Randolph-Macon started strong but the Scarlet Raiders bounced back quickly. After going down 4-2, they flipped it to 6-4 and never looked back. Michael Suarez collected two straight kills to give his team a five point lead at 13-8. The Yellow Jackets stayed around, but the trio of Suarez, Massimo Roco, and Aleks Kolodziej were too much for them to overcome.

The second set started out similarly to the first. Randolph-Macon pulled ahead in the beginning but Rutgers-Newark eventually overcame the deficit. Tied at five, Roco led a four point run to give the Scarlet Raiders some space. However, the Yellow Jackets were more vigilant this time. They clawed their way back and tied the score at 15. Aidan Apito helped to reestablish the gap, and at 23-19 the set seemed to be wrapped up. Randolph-Macon had one last burst of energy at the end, but it just barely wasn't enough. Roco secured the last kill to scrape by with a 25-23 victory.

Once again, the Yellow Jackets had a steadier beginning in set number three. They had a 7-3 edge, and this time they managed to hold it for longer. It wasn't until Aleks Kolodziej led a three point run that Rutgers-Newark were able to draw level at 14. From there, the two opponents exchanged blows. Then, with the score at 22-21 in their favor, the Scarlet Raiders found a burst of energy to finish out both the set and the match.

Match 2: Trine 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21)

As was the trend in the first game, the Scarlet Raiders went down early. Behind 6-3, they managed to even up the score at eight. However, they could not pull ahead. Trine won seven of nine points to create a six point gap at 18-12, and that proved too much to deal with. Michael Suarez and Vincent Lopez were firing, but the Thunder were matching everything, and they took set number one 25-18.

For the first time in the day, the Scarlet Raiders went up early in set two, but Trine did not let that last for long. The score flipped from being 6-4 to Rutgers-Newark to 10-7 in favor of the Thunder. An Aleks Kolodziej service ace brought things even at 16, but that was as close as they would get. Trine scooted by while nursing a one point lead until winning four of five right at the end to snatch a 2-0 set lead.

Set number three was neck and neck at the beginning. There was no lead larger than two until a five point run by the Thunder set them apart 14-9. From there, it seemed to be all Trine. The Scarlet Raiders could not put together a run until match point at 24-16. Derek Au led a five point charge, but the task was too tall, and the Thunder completed the sweep.
