Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Rutgers-Newark Sweeps and Gets Swept in Home Tri-match

NEWARK, NJ | It was an up and down day for men's volleyball (13-7), as they took a 3-0 loss to Stevenson (9-4) but followed it up with a victory over Purchase (8-9) of the same scoreline.

Match 1: Stevenson 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-20)

The Scarlet Raiders began the match with a five point run, which was unlike their recent trend of starting sets slowly. The Mustangs did eventually get going, and they won five of six points to draw level at 10. After Massimo Roco and Michael Suarez both worked to re-establish a three point gap, Stevenson won seven consecutive points, and nine of eleven. Finding themselves down 22-18, the home team worked to tie the game again, but the visitors took three of the final four points to grab the first set.

Stevenson started strongly in the second set, going ahead 5-2 courtesy of kills from Ryan Thenell and Anthony Pezzino. However, their attacks began to falter allowing Rutgers-Newark back into the set. Down by two points at 11-9, the Scarlet Raiders rattled off six straight to take a four point lead. They took that lead late into the set, but the Mustangs kicked into high gear in crunch time. They went on an eight point run to close out the set after being down 17-21.

Once again the visitors were ahead from the beginning in set three. After taking the first four points, they nursed that advantage until Michael Suarez leveled the score at 15. Stevenson quickly jumped back ahead with three points in a row, and they never looked back from there. Rutgers-Newark stayed within striking distance, but they just could not catapult ahead of their opposition. In the end, it was one of the closest 3-0 matches that you will ever see.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, Purchase 0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-11)

Purchase began the first set well, taking a 6-2 lead. They continued to hold that edge even after the Scarlet Raiders tied the score at nine and ten. It wasn't until 18-18 that the home team finally pulled ahead, and even that was only temporary. After taking three straight to set the score at 20-18 in their favor, the Panthers responded with three of their own. It took a four point burst right at the end led by Vincent Lopez and Amir Johnson for Rutgers-Newark to swipe the first set away from their opponents.

The visitors were again aggressive in the opening stages, but their 6-2 advantage quickly melted away after a four point run from the hosts. The lead exchanged several times, including after a pair of consecutive service aces from Massimo Roco, but then the Panthers went on an 8-1 tear that put them up by six. However, the Scarlet Raiders responded ferociously. They completely shut Purchase down, winning the final 12 points of the set to double their set lead and put them on the verge of securing a 3-0 victory.

Purchase seemed to have run out of gas in the final set. After a contentious start setting the score at 6-6, Rutgers-Newark took 11 of 12 points to create a ten point difference at 17-7. From there, the home team cruised to a simple set three win. It was a nice way to bounce back after a tough first game.
