Baseball Triumphs Over UW-River Falls in Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational Opener

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Rutgers-Newark baseball opened their 2025 Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational campaign with an impressive 9-5 victory over UW-River Falls in a tightly contested match- up on Friday. The Scarlet Raiders took control from the beginning and jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning.

After a bases-loaded RBI walk by Gil Prial, Dario Morales delivered a clutch three-run single to give Rutgers-Newark a 4-0 advantage. However, the next three innings saw both teams struggle to score, with neither side adding to the scoreboard.

Rutgers-Newark broke the scoring drought in the bottom of the fifth when Michael Weinbel laced a double to left field, bringing home the Recchia brothers—Paul and Matt—for two more runs. The Scarlet Raiders extended their lead with a pair of runs in the sixth and added another in the eighth inning.

Despite facing a comfortable deficit, UW-River Falls mounted a late rally in the top of the eighth. The Falcons put up four runs, cutting Rutgers-Newark's lead to just three runs at 8-5, before the Scarlet Raiders added another run in the bottom of the eighth. UW-River Falls followed with a single run in the ninth, but could not mount a full comeback, as the Scarlet Raiders held firm to secure the win.

Matthew King earned the win on the mound for Rutgers-Newark, pitching 6.0 solid innings. King allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out five batters. UW-River Falls' Gavin took the loss after 4.0 innings of work, giving up four earned runs and striking out five.

Weinbel led the offensive charge for the Scarlet Raiders, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Eric Recchia also contributed, scoring twice and drawing two walks.

Rutgers-Newark (6-5) will look to carry their momentum into the next game of the invitational as they continue their spring break tour of Florida.
