Fredonia Edges Rutgers-Newark in Sunday Morning Clash, 7-4

DAVENPORT, Fla. - In a tightly contested game on Sunday morning, Fredonia held off Rutgers-Newark baseball 7-4, with a late surge in the seventh inning proving to be the difference. The game, which saw both teams finish with eight hits apiece, was a back-and-forth affair before Fredonia's four-run inning broke it open in game two of the Russ Matt Central Florida Invitational.

Fredonia struck first, getting on the board in the top of the third with a lone run. Rutgers-Newark quickly responded in the bottom of the fourth, with a two-run rally that gave the Scarlet Raiders a brief 2-1 lead. However, Fredonia wasn't done, tying the game with a run in the top of the sixth before exploding for four runs in the seventh to take a commanding 6-2 lead.

Rutgers-Newark fought back in the bottom of the seventh, tacking on two runs to close the gap to 6-4. Fredonia added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. The Scarlet Raiders had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't capitalize to steal the win.

Fredonia's Michael Burns earned the win on the mound, tossing six solid innings. He allowed just one earned run and struck out five batters to keep the Scarlet Raiders off balance. On the other side, Rutgers-Newark's Luke Hagen started the game, but it was Matthew L'Hommedieu who was tagged with the loss after surrendering four earned runs in just two innings of work.

Rutgers-Newark's Michael Weinbel continued his hot hitting, finishing the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and a trio of RBI, providing a bright spot for the Scarlet Raiders' offense. Despite his efforts, it wasn't enough as Fredonia's late offensive push propelled them to victory.

The game marked a tough loss for Rutgers-Newark (6-6), as they look to bounce back tomorrow against Scranton at 4:30 p.m.
