Johns Hopkins Rallies Late to Defeat Rutgers-Newark, 12-9

BALTIMORE, Md. - In a tough back-and-forth battle, Rutgers-Newark baseball fell to Johns Hopkins University, 12-9, after a dramatic six-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The game began with a fast start for both teams. Rutgers-Newark took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Johns Hopkins answered quickly with three runs in the bottom half to seize the lead, 3-1.

The Scarlet Raiders responded in the third inning with a rally of their own. Matthew Storch ignited the offense with an RBI double, and Dario Morales followed up with a two-run homer, giving Rutgers-Newark a 4-3 advantage. The Raiders continued to capitalize on their momentum, adding one more run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to stretch their lead to 7-3.

However, Johns Hopkins wasn't ready to back down. The Blue Jays mounted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs, and then chipped away again in the seventh with a single tally, closing the gap to 7-6.

With a 9-7 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth, Rutgers-Newark looked to hold on for the win. But Johns Hopkins exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning, taking the lead for good and ultimately securing the 12-9 victory.

Despite the loss, there were standout performances from the Scarlet Raiders. Michael Weinbel was a bright spot, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. On the mound, Matthew L'Hommedieu suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs in a challenging outing.

Johns Hopkins finished with 11 hits, compared to Rutgers-Newark's nine, and capitalized on timely hitting to complete their comeback. The Scarlet Raiders will look to regroup as they prepare for their next challenge, while Johns Hopkins celebrates a hard-fought win in a game that featured plenty of late-game drama.

The Scarlet Raiders return to the field on Thursday, April 3 at Ramapo. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
