Newark, N.J. - The Rutgers–Newark men's soccer team delivered an emphatic 9–1 performance over Yeshiva University, overcoming an early deficit to dominate the game from start to finish.
Yeshiva struck first when Franco Busso converted a penalty kick at the 5:29 mark, giving them an early 1–0 lead. Rutgers–Newark responded quickly and never looked back. Erick Cortes put on a dazzling display, scoring four goals in the first half to spark the Scarlet Raiders' attack. Ian Brown and Gerson Gonzalez-Quevedo also found the back of the net, while Pablo Moreno added two more goals before halftime to give Rutgers–Newark a commanding 8–1 advantage at the break. In the second half, Henrique Esteves capped the scoring with a late strike assisted by Chihiro Suenaga.
Rutgers–Newark outshot Yeshiva 16–7, with 14 of those efforts landing on goal. Cortes finished with four goals on five shots, Moreno tallied two goals, and Celik contributed two assist to highlight the balanced offensive effort.
With the victory, Rutgers–Newark improved to 1–1 on the season. The Scarlet Raiders will look to carry their offensive momentum into the Brick City Classic on September 6, when they host Farmingdale State and The College of New Jersey.
