Newark, NJ – The Rutgers–Newark men's soccer team battled back-and-forth but ultimately pulled out a thrilling 4-3 victory over Eastern University on Wednesday night at Frederick Douglass Field. With the win, the Scarlet Raiders improved to 4-1 on the season while handing Eastern its third straight loss.
The Raiders wasted no time striking first as Ian Brown found the back of the net in the sixth minute off a feed from Ethan Geronimo. Eastern responded midway through the half when Zach Sievert equalized to make it 1-1 heading into halftime. The second half brought an offensive surge from both sides, producing five goals in a 30-minute span. Evan Cope gave the Eagles a 2-1 edge in the 60th minute, but Brown answered less than two minutes later, leveling the match with help from Erick Cortes. Just seconds after Newark tied it, Sievert struck again to push Eastern back in front, 3-2.
Refusing to fold, the Scarlet Raiders regrouped and equalized in the 70th minute as Gerson Gonzalez-Quevedo finished off a setup from Pablo Moreno. With the match hanging in the balance, Moreno delivered the decisive blow in the 90th minute, scoring the game-winner off an assist from Eann Vieira to send the home crowd into celebration.
Brown led the way with two goals for Rutgers–Newark, while Moreno added a goal and an assist. Gonzalez-Quevedo also chipped in with a crucial tally off the bench. Between the posts, goalkeeper Ilan Golden was a difference-maker, recording eight saves to keep the Scarlet Raiders within reach and ultimately help secure the win.
