Late Rally Carries Scarlet Raiders Past Ramapo, 6-4

NEWARK, NJ – Back-to-back two-out RBI singles in the eighth inning by senior second baseman Matt Connors and senior centerfielder Michael DiCenso lifted Rutgers-Newark to a 6-4 win over Ramapo College in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The Scarlet Raiders (19-10, NJAC 9-2) rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 4-3 to get the crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference victory over the Roadrunners (23-5, NJAC 6-5). The teams square off again in Mahwah tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. to complete the home-and-home regular season set.

Junior righthander Nick Evans got the win after getting the final two outs in the top of the seventh in relief of junior Connor Medler who gave up all four runs Ramapo runs on eight hits while striking out seven and walking five.

Senior Ryan Williams pitched a scoreless eighth for the Raiders before sophomore closer Matt Larangera earned his sixth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

DiCenso, junior designated hitter Mike Ciaramello and senior rightfielder Michael Cassese collected two hits apiece for Rutgers-Newark with Cassese notching two doubles.

Sophomore third baseman Christian Spurr paced the Roadrunners by going three for five with a two-run single to cap Ramapo's three-run second inning outburst.

Ramapo took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh when senior second baseman Pat Driscoll walked, moved to third on a double off the leftfield wall by Spurr and scored on a wild pitch.

Evans came on to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh before Cassese was hit by a pitch to start the Raiders' decisive rally in the bottom of the frame.

Cassese double and scored on a double by freshman leftfielder Jimmy Napolitano in the two-run second and doubled home the Raiders' insurance run in the eighth.
