Box Score
MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Rutgers-Newark could not hold onto an early 6-0 lead as Neumann rallied for a 16-9 win in the Northeast Challenge at the Ripken Experience.
Senior centerfielder
Matt Larangera went four for five and freshman leftfielder Ryan Macfarlane went three for six with three RBI to pace the Scarlet Raiders' 12-hit attack, but the Knights countered with a 13-hit assault to offset six errors.
Rutgers-Newark used four pitchers with reliever
Anthony Caravano (0-1) getting the loss. No Raider hurler went without yielding at least one run as Neumann scored in its half of six of the final seven innings.
Macfarlane has a 2-run single to highlight the Raiders' 6-run second inning. All the runs were unearned against Neumann starter Russ Gilliam saw three errors committed behind him while he yielded four walks and singles to Macfarlane and junior third baseman
Kevin Olah. Junior first baseman
Vin Troisi walked twice in the inning.
But the Knights (2-0) posted two runs in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth to pass Rutgers-Newark at 7-7. Junior designated hitter Dylan Burnett went two for two with an RBI double in the third, was hit by a pitch and scored twice in the 3-inning span to spark Neumann.
The Raiders seized their final lead in the fifth when freshman second baseman
Gerry Patrizio led off with a single and stole second before Macfarlane brought him home with a 2-out single to make it 8-7.
Neumann went up 9-8 in the bottom of the frame on two singles and a throwing error against reliever
Jonathan Dominguez.
A Macfarlane 2-out single knotted the game for the last time at 9-9 in the top of the sixth. Senior right-handed closer Erik Klimoff came on to shut out the Raiders on three hits while striking out two and walking no one over the final three innings.
Caravano replace Dominguez to start the sixth and blanked the Knights in the frame before a double by senior leftfielder Will Flores and a 2-out RBI single by senior first baseman Tyler Drinkard plated what proved to be the winning run in the seventh.
Neumann exploded for six runs on a double, two singles, three walks and a sacrifice fly against Caravano and sophomore
Andrew Nasti in the eighth to dash Raider hopes for a final inning comeback.
The Raiders got to the fourth inning of their scheduled game against SUNY Maritime before snow and rain forced a cancelation.
Rutgers-Newark is slated to play its first “home” game of the season on Friday, hosting Immaculata in a nonconference doubleheader at the Diamond Nation in Flemington. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
