FLEMINGTON, NJ – Senior centerfielder
Matt Larangera scored the winning run on a wild pitch as Rutgers-Newark rebounded for a 5-4 win in the nightcap after dropped the opener 2-1 in 10 innings to Immaculata in a non-conference doubleheader at the Diamond Nation.
The Raiders (2-2) totaled just eight hits in the twinbill played in nearly freezing temperatures on the artificial surface while the Mighty Macs (1-1) registered 12 hits.
IN THE OPENER, senior right-hander
Kyle Van Vliet blanked Immaculata on three hits while striking out eight and walking just three in seven innings as the starter – but it wasn't enough. Mighty Mac junior starter Bryan McHale went five innings without allowing a run while yielding one hit and a walk against five strikeouts. Senior reliever Joseph Caria retired the Raider in order in the sixth and seventh to send the game into extra innings.
A bases-loaded walk issued by Larangera in the top of the eighth plated the first run before junior shortstop
Kevin Olah ripped a game-tying, 2-out triple to centerfield in the bottom of the frame.
The Raiders escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth when junior
Jonathan Dominguez coaxed a fly ball to centerfield for the final out.
But in the top of the 10th, junior shortstop Joe DiGiaimo walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on an infield single and scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Raiders put two runners on with two out in the bottom of the inning, but a fielder's choice grounder ended the contest.
IN THE NIGHTCAP, Rutgers-Newark scored four unearned runs in the fifth to erase a 3-1 deficit and make a winner out of junior right-hander
Michael Garcia (2-0).
A 2-out error opened the flood gates as consecutive singles by freshman third baseman
Brian Kokos and Larangera were followed by back-to-back walks by junior catcher
Steve Tamayo and freshman second baseman
Gerry Patrizio. Larangera scored the game-winning run from third on a wild pitch to cap the bizarre rally.
The Raiders' first run came on an RBI single by Olah in the third inning which tied the game at 1-1.
DiGiaimo and freshman designated hitter Michael Lascomb belted solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to stake the Mighty Macs to a 3-1 lead. DiGiaimo singled home Immaculata's final run in the sixth.
Senior pitcher
Anthony Caravano got the save by surviving an inning-opening infield error and a 1-out single to end the chilly evening.
Rutgers-Newark travels to Virginia to play Frostburg State on Friday, host Hampden-Sydney on Saturday and Franklin & Marshall on Sunday in the Wilcox Tournament.
