NEWARK, NJ – Ramapo senior ace Travis Zilg stopped Rutgers-Newark with a complete-game five-hitter as the Scarlet Raiders fell, 6-3, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game in Bears & Eagle Riverfront Stadium.
A day after the Raiders (8-24, NAJC 3-9) upended the nationally-ranked Roadrunners (22-6-1, NJAC 7-4-1) behind a five-hit, complete game by sophomore
Andrew Nasti, Ramapo and Zilg returned the favor to split the home-and-away series.
Zilg (3-1) struck out just two while walking two to notch his second complete game of the season while Raider senior right-hander
Kyle Van Vliet (2-4) suffered the loss. Van Vliet yielded six runs on nine hits while striking out one against four walks in six full innings.
Senior centerfielder
Matt Larangera's ground rule double to lead off the third inning led to Rutgers-Newark's first run when sophomore catcher
Chris Schultz followed with an RBI single down the right field line. That run trimmed the Ramapo lead to 4-1.
In the fourth inning, junior rightfielder
Jimmy Napolitano took home on a double steal to make it 4-2. After Napolitano and senior designated hitter
Ryan Maloney had back-to-back singles with one out, Maloney was erased at second on a fielder's choice ground ball. Freshman
Brian Kokos stole second, beating the throw by an eyelash, while Napolitano raced home.
Freshman leftfielder
Michael Murray swatted an RBI double to left center field in the sixth to deliver the final run of the game. Zilg recovered from the double by retiring the final 10 batters of the game.
Freshman catcher Ryan Rinsky had an RBI single in the second inning and a two-run single down the left field line in the third to spark a decisive three-run rally which staked Ramapo to a 4-0 lead. Rinsky was the only player in the game with more than one hit.
A two-out, two-run single to center field by senior rightfielder Dave Jacob gave the Roadrunners a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Richard Stockton in an NJAC doubleheader at noon on Saturday in the stadium.
