NEWARK, NJ – Sophomore shortstop Ryan MacFarlane gave his Rutgers University-Newark teammates a nice present on his birthday – a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth for a 3-2 New Jersey Athletic Conference win over Ramapo College.
 
MacFarlane slapped the game-winner through the right side of a drawn-in infield with one away in the Scarlet Raiders' final at bat to send the team into a celebration in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.  A walk to freshman catcher Josh Cote, a sacrifice bunt by sophomore second baseman Gerry Patrizio and a wild pitch set the table for MacFarlane.
 
The hit made a winner of Raider freshman reliever Chas Bohannon who sent the Roadrunners down in order in the eighth and ninth inning after a masterful seven innings by senior starter Michael Garcia.  Garcia throttled Ramapo for seven full innings, allowing just four hits while striking out five and walking five.
 
The Raiders took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on back-to-back RBI singles by junior leftfielder Michael Murray and Bohannon who started the game as the designated hitter.  Sophomore rightfielder Cameron Dias singled with one out ahead of a walk by senior centerfielder Jimmy Napolitano to ignite the rally.
 
Ramapo notched single runs against Garcia in the sixth and seventh innings but stranded two runners in each frame.
 
Murray went three for four and MacFarlane notched two hits to pace the Raiders' 8-hit attack.
 
Rutgers-Newark (10-19, NJAC 3-8) completes the regular-season series with the Roadrunners (17-9-1, NJAC 5-5-1) in Mahwah on Friday at 3:30 p.m.  The Raiders visit Richard Stockton on Saturday for an 11:30 a.m. NJAC twin bill.
