Scarlet Raiders fall in home opener, 6-3

BASEBALL

Sophomore left fielder Josh Cote had an RBI single in the Scarlet Raiders' 6-3 loss to Purchase College Monday afternoon
Box Score NEWARK, N.J.  -- After pounding out 46 hits in the final three games of their California trip, the Rutgers-Newark baseball team's bats went cold like the weather Monday afternoon, collecting just seven hits and scoring just three runs in a tough 6-3 setback to Purchase College of New York in the Scarlet Raiders' home opener at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The setback dropped the Scarlet Raiders' seasonal mark to 4-7 overall. Purchase College improved to 3-1 with the win.

The Scarlet Raiders never seemed to get on track Monday, surrendering two runs in each of the third and fourth innings, sealing their doom.

After falling behind, 5-0, the Scarlet Raiders managed to score one in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to make the game more respectable.

No Scarlet Raider player collected more than one hit.

Sophomore left fielder Josh Cote (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) drove in a run with a single in the seventh inning, scoring Rowland Goodman (West Caldwell, NJ/James J. Caldwell) who was hit by a pitch as a pinch hitter.

The Scarlet Raiders added a run in the eighth to cut the lead to 5-2 when freshman catcher Justin Marks (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) singled, stole a base and scored on a passed ball.

After Purchase scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth off relief pitcher Dominick Fazio (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest), the Scarlet Raiders scored again in the ninth, but couldn't get any closer. Freshman centerfielder Anthony Perconte (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) walked and came around to score on an error.

Freshman right-hander Yanni Vayas (Warren, NJ/St. Joseph of Metuchen) threw almost four innings and suffered the setback. Senior righty Shane Nolan (Livingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) held down the fort for a while, throwing almost three full innings before giving way to freshman lefty Dominick Fazio in the eighth.

Chris Triano drove in two runs with a double for the winners.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action Tuesday afternoon, when they play host to John Jay College at Bears and Eagles Riverfront with the first pitch coming at 3:30 p.m.
