Baseball Uses Electric 4th Inning to Knock Down Lehman, 22-6

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark baseball squad picked up its 4th-straight win against Lehman College, 22-6, this afternoon at Weequahic Park. 

Rutgers-Newark (12-4) tallied 11 hits and scored 22 runs with one error in a game that experienced all four seasons and a lightning delay. Robert Gonzalez paced the Scarlet Raiders, finishing 2-for-3 with three runs and 2 RBIs while Eric Recchia and Dario Morales each added 4 RBIs. On the hill, Alex Couto (1-0) picked up the win with two innings pitched and three strikeouts. Lehman (0-6) scored six runs on 9 hits and tallied three errors. Fredrick de la Rosa led the Lightning with two hits and 2 RBIs in the loss. 

Lehman jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the Scarlet Raiders via an Eli Fermin RBI single to right field. Rutgers-Newark responded with three runs in the bottom of the 2nd that started with a wild pitch. Recchia brought in two runs with a 2 RBI single through the left side before Gonzalez added a 4th via a wild pitch. 

Lehman would take a 5-4 lead in the top of the 4th before a 40-minute lightning delay put the game on hold. Out of the break, Rutgers-Newark tallied 17 runs behind seven walks and six hits. Lehman plated another run in the top of the 5th but was not able to close the gap after the explosive inning by the Scarlet Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Friday, March 22 when they hit the road to take on Franklin & Marshall.
