Rutgers-Newark Baseball Opens Season with Split Versus Muhlenberg College

NEWARK, NJ — The Rutgers-Newark baseball team kicked off its season with a commanding 11-5 win over Muhlenberg College at Weequahic Park in game one of the doubleheader on opening day.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 11, Muhlenberg 5

The Scarlet Raiders wasted no time in making a statement, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. With timely hitting and solid base running, Rutgers-Newark set the tone early and never looked back.

Matthew King delivered a strong performance on the mound, tossing 5.0 innings to earn the win. The right-hander allowed just a few runs while keeping the Mulhlenberg offense at bay, providing the perfect foundation for the offense to build upon.

The offensive surge continued throughout the game as the Scarlet Raiders piled on runs, with contributions from multiple players. Jon Rosado went 3-for-5 with an RBI, Jesse Evensen went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Matthew Storch and Daniel Fedorco also recorded a multi-hit performance. The win marked an impressive start to the season for Rutgers-Newark.

Game 2: Muhlenberg 18, Rutgers-Newark 5

In game two of the doubleheader, the Rutgers-Newark baseball team was defeated by Muhlenberg, 18-5. The Mules wasted no time, opening the game with four runs in the first inning and continuing their offensive surge throughout the game, scoring in every inning except the seventh. Despite a solid offensive effort from the Scarlet Raiders, who collected 10 hits, they couldn't overcome the Mules' relentless attack.

Muhlenberg finished with 16 hits and committed only two errors, showcasing a strong all-around performance. Rutgers-Newark was led by Eric Recchia, who went 2-for-5, and Ulisses Ferraz, who drove in two RBI with a 1-for-3 outing. However, the rough start to the game hindered forward progress and starting pitcher Chase Ostrowski took the loss after allowing six earned runs over 2.0 innings.

The Scarlet Raiders will look to regroup and bounce back in their next outing after a tough loss to the Mules.

The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Tuesday when they play at Stevens for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch in Hoboken.
