EWING, NJ – Sophomore shortstop Patrick Reitemeyer's two-run home run capped a four-run fifth inning which carried Rutgers-Newark to a 5-4 New Jersey Athletic Conference win over The College of New Jersey in the opener of a doubleheader in Ackerman Park.

The Lions (8-9-1, NJAC 1-2) snapped the Scarlet Raiders' (11-6, NJAC 2-1) four-game winning streak with a 2-1 win in the nightcap as sophomore pitcher Billy Cerruti (1-1) lost a pitching duel to TCNJ's Connor Henderson.

The Raiders produced what proved to be the game-winning run in the sixth on a walk by senior catcher Gerard Russomanno, a double by junior first baseman Matt Lingoand a ground ball to second base off the bat of sophomore centerfielder Michael DiCenso to make it 5-1.

Sophomore righthander Ryan Williams (4-0) carried the Raiders through the seventh, yielding a three-run homer to cap a four-run Lion outburst before handing the ball over to relievers John Kuder and Michael Hansen. The duo gave up a hit apiece while pitching a full inning each to preserve the win. Hansen struck out two to post his fifth save of the season.

In the fifth, Lingo started the rally with a walked followed by a one-out triple by sophomore rightfielder Steve Giordano. Giordano scored on an throwing error off of a ground ball by sophomore second baseman Matt Connorsto set the stage for Reitemeyer's fourth home run of the season.

In game two, Cerruti struck out three and walked two while scattering six hits in seven full innings of work. He gave up a run on two singles in the second and the decisive run on three hits in the sixth before junior Tom Abair retired TCNJ in order in the eighth.

But, Henderson allowed only a first inning run on back-to-back singles by senior leftfielder Brian Gill and Reitemeyer ahead of junior designated hitter Anthony Yeswita's ground out to the pitcher. He yielded just six hits while striking out five and walking just one in 8-1/3 innings.

Rutgers-Newark left the potential tying run in the person of junior third baseman Joe Furnaguera at third base in the top of the ninth.

The Raiders host New Jersey City in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Monday at 3:30 p.m. in an NJAC contest rescheduled from last Thursday because of rain.
