BALTIMORE, MD – No. 30 Johns Hopkins swept past Rutgers-Newark in a non-conference doubleheader on the Blue Jay Diamond.
Johns Hopkins 13, Rutgers-Newark 5
Johns Hopkins 15, Rutgers-Newark 0
Junior second baseman
Matt Connors notched three singles, scored each time and drew a walk to pace Rutgers-Newark, but Johns Hopkins erupted for a dozen runs in the first three innings on its way to a 13-5 win in the first game.
Scarlet Raider junior ace
Ryan Williams got off to a rocky start to the season as Johns Hopkins chased him from the mound in the second inning. Williams gave up nine runs on just three hits while yielding four walks and hitting three of the last four batters that he faced in just 1-2/3 innings as the Scarlet Raiders fell into an 11-4 hole in the opening two frames.
Rutgers-Newark out-hit the Hopkins, 11-9, but the early deficit was too great to overcome.
Junior shortstop
Patrick Reitemeyer had a pair of RBI singles while senior designated hitter
Anthony Yeswita went two for three with a walk and a run batted in.
Connors singled to open the first inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by third baseman
Joe Furnaguera.
In the second, Rutgers-Newark took a 4-2 lead on two walks followed by consecutive singles by Connors, junior leftfielder
Michael Cassese and Reitemeyer.
But Williams, who gave up a two-run home run to all-American second baseman Brian Youchak in the first inning, could not find the strike zone in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore reliever
Connor Medler gave up a bases-loaded, two-out single to the first batter he faced before an infield error extended the Blue Jay inning. Two more RBI singles followed before the rally was stopped after nine runs had crossed the plate.
Connors singled in the sixth and scored on a two-out single to right by Reitemeyer .
Medler lasted through the fifth, allowing three unearned runs on seven hits while striking out one and walking none. Rookie right-hander
Ryan Pascullo closed out the game, allowing one run on three walks and a single in the sixth.
IN GAME TWO, four Johns Hopkins pitchers combined for a 9-inning no-hitter in a 15-0 decision. Starter Greg Harbeck went six innings before turning the keys over to Alex Eliopoulos, Lucas Henneman and Andrew Pevsner. Each reliever turned in a full inning of work.
Yeswita, junior catcher
Anthony Palladino, freshman catcher
Christian Kasa and rookie outfielder
Owen Harshaney drew walks for the Raiders.
The Blue Jays collected a dozen hits against four Rutgers-Newark pitchers and took advantage of seven Raider errors.
Rutgers-Newark now packs its bags for the annual spring break trip to California. The Raiders take on the University of Redlands on Friday on the West Coast.
